How different structures can share a molecular formula

A molecular formula counts elements; it does not specify every connection between them. Different structures can therefore share a formula while representing distinct chemical identities.

For peptide records, pair the formula with sequence, modifications and stereochemical information where available. A matching formula is one consistency check. It is not a substitute for the full identity description or a sample-specific analytical assignment.
